随着中央空调技术的发展，中央空调的能效比一般优于柜式、分体式传统空调。室外机根据室内机的实际需要来输出冷/热量，通过压缩机转速的变化，可以实现制冷量随室外温度的上升而上升，下降而下降，这样就实现了制冷量与房间热负荷的自动匹配，能更好的实现节能。当室内外温差较大时，刚开启变频空调时，会以较大功率高频运转，快速进行调节制冷，短时间耗电大，但持续运行长时间后，房间内进入恒温状态，变频空调将比同匹数定频空调省电。同时，家用中央空调每个房间的室内机可以独立调节运行，可根据自身需求单独开启，室外机可随着开启的室内机台数调节耗电量。
